Represents the interests of Sarasota County Government as a premier sports destination with various sports, recreation and tourism related organizations. Ensures that the strategy for sport tourism is implemented, monitored and evaluated. This position plays a pivotal role in cultivating strong community relationships, managing sports tourism related agreements, and fosters relationships with sports tourism partners. Working closely with Visit Sarasota, event right holders, and/or community members to strategically plan and provide support within County owned and/or supported venues ensuring successful events resulting in increased economic impact for Sarasota County.
Sports Tourism Initiatives
Works in partnership with the Visit Sarasota, non-profits, other agencies and organizations in the development and implementation of major sporting and recreational events aligned within the overall tourism strategy.
Develops and maintains strong relationships with various County business units, Visit Sarasota and other partners by facilitating various initiatives in a timely and efficient manner in support of sports tourism and the desired economic results. Develops partnerships with local organizing committees in conjunction with Visit Sarasota supporting the delivery of well managed sports tourism events. Engages with partners and represents the County during events. Assists with event delivery as needed.
Serves as an advocate for sports tourism within all PRNR and County (Fire, Emergency Management, Planning & Development Services, etc.) departments to identify opportunities to improve sports tourism by creating efficiencies.
Manages the creation and the successful implementation of a Sports Tourism Ambassador program utilizing volunteers to support sports tourism events. Provides onsite logistic support for major sports tourism events supported by PRNR and/or Visit Sarasota as needed.
Utilizes County facilities to maximize sports tourism opportunities while supporting the overall mission and intended use as designated by PRNR. Optimize the usage of County assets to support sport tourism events (mobile stage, equipment, etc.)
In coordination with partners, strategically plans capital investments enhancing existing sports tourism assets leveraging a high economic return on investment. Inventories existing assets evaluates opportunities for enhancement and assists in the development of plans for facility upgrades required to enhance sports tourism initiatives.
Develops and manages budget allocations. Reviews and recommends financial commitments. Monitors expenditures during the year and makes recommendations for budget modifications. Prepares detailed analysis and makes recommendation regarding staffing, services, facilities, and programs that impact the annual budget.
Tracks trends, maintains records and keeps statistical data obtained from multiple sources. Produces reports, presentations and other material. Communicates and disperses information.
Researches best practices for development and operation of sports facilities and hosting in partnership with Visit Sarasota and other partners. Develops, maintains, and implements policy and/or guidelines detailing the parameters of usage of County owned assets for sports tourism related events.
Monitors and supports the collection of sports tourism economic impact figures. Generates, organizes, and maintains information relevant to the ongoing measurement and analysis of data for sports tourism.
Serves on boards and various committees representing the County.
Contract Administration:
Manages and performs contractual oversight of sports tourism related agreements. Fosters communication and community engagement between organizations, the County and the community. Ensures contractual obligations are met.
Develops strategies, oversight practices and guidelines for the long-term use of County owned assets. Serves as the fixed asset designee for County owned assets contained within the facilities.
Assists in the evaluation of existing facility agreements. Assists in the identification of opportunities and negotiates modification to agreements leveraging availability to fully optimize use of County owned facilities.
Supports County-owned venues for use as major sports tourism initiatives including athletic complexes, rowing venues, and other high leverage facilities.
Manages proactive assessments of fraud awareness, prevention, detection and risk mitigation activities in area of responsibility; oversees financial, compliance, operational and performance audits; reviews audit findings and ensures appropriate controls are established and implemented.
Major League Baseball Liaison
Serves as a co-liaison to Major League Baseball franchises including Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles. Responsible for managing the agreement/MOU with the franchises. Projects, facilitates, and manages financial commitments. Serves as backup fixed asset designee for County owned assets contained within the facilities.
Serves as co-project manager and subject matter expert regarding repair/renovations and capital project management within County-owned major league facilities, coordinates with contractors, Facilities Maintenance and franchises in management of work.
Actively engages in the transfer of knowledge and succession planning fostering the continued relationship with MLB partners.
Work Hours: Monday Friday, 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. with some evening and weekend presentations or public appearances.
About You
Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Public Administration, Business, Finance, Tourism, Recreation, Sports Management or job-related field and three (3) years professional experience within sports tourism and development OR Seven (7) years professional job-related experience in management of technical projects/programs and strategic planning can be substituted at management discretion for the required education OR Progressively responsible related professional experience can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required degree.
Preferred Qualifications:
Proven experience in sport tourism with a track record of success.
Experience working in complex multi-stakeholder and multi-sport events with a solid understanding of the business objectives of tourism and the sport tourism industry.
