Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO)

Location: Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu

Project Type: Federal Construction Project

Start Date: April 2026

Duration: Approximately 6 Months

Compensation : $60-65/hr

Position Overview

We are seeking a qualified Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) for an upcoming federal construction project at Naval Base Ventura County – Point Mugu. This is a 6-month assignment beginning in April or May. The SSHO will be responsible for implementing and managing all aspects of the project’s Safety and Health Program in compliance with federal and site-specific requirements.

The ideal candidate will have experience working on federal projects and a strong understanding of EM 385-1-1 safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and manage the project-specific Accident Prevention Plan (APP)
  • Ensure full compliance with EM 385-1-1 and OSHA standards
  • Serve as the primary safety liaison with government representatives
  • Conduct daily site safety inspections and document findings
  • Lead daily safety briefings and weekly safety meetings
  • Review and approve Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs)
  • Monitor subcontractor safety compliance
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions; prepare detailed reports
  • Maintain all required safety documentation and reporting
  • Enforce corrective actions and ensure timely resolution of safety issues
Required Qualifications
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification (Required)
  • EM 385-1-1 40-Hour Training (Required)
  • Prior experience serving as SSHO on federal or USACE/NAVFAC projects preferred
  • Strong knowledge of federal construction safety standards
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to pass background screening for base access
Preferred Qualifications
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
  • CHST, CSP, or equivalent safety credential
  • Experience working on active military installations
Work Schedule
  • Full-time, on-site
  • Standard construction work hours (may vary by project needs)
