Safety Officer (SSHO) – Field Safety Execution

Reno, NV (Project-Based Travel May Be Required)
Full-Time | Field-Based Role

Join a Team Where Safety Drives the Operation

A growing civil construction company is seeking a Safety Officer (SSHO) to support and strengthen safety efforts across active construction and earthwork projects.

This is a highly hands-on field role for someone who wants to be actively involved in operations, work directly with crews, and make a real impact on jobsite safety every day.

The Safety Officer will work closely with superintendents, foremen, operators, and field leadership to ensure safety expectations are clearly communicated, consistently enforced, and integrated into daily production activities.

The ideal candidate is proactive, confident in the field, highly observant, and passionate about building a strong safety culture through leadership, accountability, and communication.

Key Responsibilities

Field Safety Oversight

  • Conduct routine jobsite safety inspections and audits
  • Identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and unsafe behaviors in real time
  • Take immediate corrective action when safety concerns arise
  • Monitor daily field activities to ensure safe execution of work
  • Enforce OSHA standards and project-specific safety requirements

Safety Execution & Field Support

  • Work directly alongside field crews to reinforce safe work practices
  • Maintain a visible and engaged presence across active projects
  • Support implementation of company safety procedures and expectations
  • Ensure proper use of PPE, equipment, and safety protocols

Safety Culture & Accountability

  • Promote a strong safety culture through communication, consistency, and leadership by example
  • Hold crews accountable while maintaining professionalism and respect
  • Partner with field leadership to ensure safety remains a daily operational priority
  • Support proactive hazard recognition and prevention

Training & Communication

  • Conduct toolbox talks, orientations, and on-site safety training
  • Ensure employees understand project hazards and safe work practices
  • Communicate safety updates, lessons learned, and field observations
  • Reinforce safety expectations through daily interaction with crews

Incident Response & Documentation

  • Respond to incidents, injuries, and near misses on active projects
  • Complete accurate incident documentation and reporting
  • Assist with investigations and corrective action implementation
  • Support compliance efforts through organized documentation and reporting

Coordination with Field Operations

  • Work closely with superintendents and foremen to align safety with production
  • Participate in pre-task planning and hazard analysis
  • Help ensure safety processes support efficient field execution rather than disrupt it

Qualifications

Required

  • 3+ years of experience in construction safety or related field
  • Strong understanding of OSHA standards and construction safety practices
  • Experience working on active construction sites
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with field crews and leadership
  • Ability to identify hazards quickly and respond proactively
  • Self-motivated with strong field presence and initiative

Required Certifications

  • CHST (Construction Health & Safety Technician)
  • OSHA 500

Preferred

  • Experience in:
    • Civil construction
    • Earthwork
    • Underground utilities
    • Heavy equipment environments
  • First Aid / CPR Certification
  • Experience with incident investigations and safety reporting processes

What Success Looks Like

  • Improve field-level safety awareness and accountability
  • Build strong working relationships with crews and operations teams
  • Identify and address hazards before incidents occur
  • Maintain organized, accurate, and audit-ready safety documentation
  • Help strengthen and support a proactive company-wide safety culture

Why This Opportunity?

This is an opportunity to join a growing construction organization where safety is viewed as a critical part of operational success — not just compliance.

The company is looking for someone who wants to be actively involved in the field, build credibility with crews, support leadership, and contribute to long-term operational growth through strong safety execution.
