Director of Government Affairs, Trade Policy & International Affairs

The American Soybean Association's (ASA) Government Affairs team in Washington D.C . is seeking a government affairs director to lead its trade policy portfolio, which includes issues relating to trade, market access, tariff and non-tariff trade barriers, international food aid, foreign ownership, and other issues as assigned. This individual would lead advocacy execution, collaborate across ASA functions and with state affiliates, serve as lead ASA Government Affairs liaison to the U.S. Soybean Export Council and World Initiative for Soy in Human Health, and build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders. This position will direct trade policy advocacy efforts, including drafting public comments, formal testimony, and letters; engaging with trade negotiators, lawmakers, embassies, and their staff; coordinate closely with ASA's state affiliates; and the development of advocacy materials.

ASA is a national trade association that advocates on behalf of all U.S. soybean farmers on domestic and international trade issues. It is the collective voice of nearly 500,000 producers in 30 soybean-producing states represented through 26 state affiliates. ASA is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, and its Government Affairs team is based in Washington, D.C.

What we need:
  • Experience (at least 5 years) working on legislative or agricultural trade matters, including an understanding of trade policy, tariff and non-tariff trade barriers, and policies related to agricultural export market access.
  • Bachelor's degree in agriculture, business, political science or related field.
  • Strong communications skills.
  • Strong writing skills which include the ability to develop both technical policy documents and summary documents of complex issues.
  • Ability to work in a bipartisan and diplomatic manner.
  • Strong organizational and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to learn and work independently and proactively, while accepting guidance from other team members.
  • Can-do attitude.

  • Position requires up to 15% travel.
